Why we made shoes from Merino wool?

Merino wool is a special type of wool: high-quality and fine. Our Merino sneakers are equipped with genuine Austrian Merino loden from Steiner. This material is very easy to care for, adaptable, and breathable!

Merino wool naturally has antibacterial properties, quickly wicks away moisture, which helps prevent the formation of odors. Thanks to the unique fiber structure of Merino wool with numerous air chambers, GANTER Merino sneakers are the perfect companion for every season: cooling in summer, warming in winter. In short, they provide a perfect wearing experience.

We only use genuine Austrian walk loden.

For our Merino sneakers, we collaborate with one of the most prestigious Austrian loden manufacturers.

  • easy to care for
    • Wool has antibacterial properties and a strong self-cleaning effect. Regular airing and brushing with a natural hair brush are usually sufficient.
    • When combined with leather materials, shoes should be treated with waterproofing spray.
  • climate balancing
    • Merino acts like an air conditioner. It cools in summer and warms in winter.

  • breathable
    • So breathable that you can even breathe easily through it.

  • water-repellent
    • The natural wool fat (lanolin) makes our Merino walk loden water-repellent.

  • woven
    • A woven fabric is more robust than a knitted one. Many Merino shoes are produced with woven walk fabric.

  • 80% Merino & 20% Wool
    • Optimal combination for robustness and tear resistance with the positive properties of fine Merino wool.

  • windproof
    • The extremely fine fiber structure of Merino wool makes the loden very soft.

  • biodegradable
    • Wool is biodegradable and can even be used as fertilizer.

  • mulesing-free
    • What is Mulesing? To prevent flies from laying eggs in the skin folds of Merino sheep, the wrinkled skin on their hindquarters is cut off with a sharp knife without anesthesia. The wounds are often left untreated. Animal rights activists around the world have long protested against this cruel practice. Nevertheless, many farmers in Australia continue to adhere to it.
    • Steiner Merino loden is guaranteed to be mulesing-free.

Care recommendations

Merino wool has antibacterial properties and a strong self-cleaning effect, making it particularly easy to care for. Regular airing and brushing with a natural hair brush are usually sufficient. Waterproofing is not usually necessary due to its natural water repellency. However, for shoes with leather components, we recommend waterproofing. For stubborn stains, you can find specialized cleaners at shoe retailers.
