Life in the beehive
One bee does not make honey. It's only when the whole hive hums and buzzes, and each bee does what it does best, that golden honey is made from flower nectar.
Bee facts
-
Thanks to bees, we can enjoy fruits, vegetables, nuts, honey, and herbs – foods that rely on the pollination and immense work of our bees.
-
Bees generate €150 billion annually. Replacing them would be priceless.
-
A few bee species form social groups with a queen, workers, guard bees, nurses, and male drones, which are fed by the workers until they fulfill their purpose.
-
Bees fly three times around the world to produce 500g of honey. A colony of 50,000 bees can produce 40 to 70 kg of honey in a season.
Unfortunately, our hardworking bees are in danger! The number of bee colonies is declining dramatically. Half of the over 700 bee species residing with us are threatened.
